The Chesapeake Baysox dropped a tight 2-1 decision to the Somerset Patriots on Thursday night at Prince George’s Stadium, falling to 17-24 on the season.

Chesapeake loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the ninth, but Somerset right-hander Kelly Austin induced a flyout and a lineout to secure his first save of the year and preserve the one-run victory.

The Baysox took their first lead of the series in the third inning when first baseman Ethan Anderson ripped an RBI double to score Johnny Tincher. Anderson has been one of the hottest hitters at home this season, batting .409 (27-for-66) with 14 RBI across 17 games at Prince George’s Stadium in Bowie.

Right-hander Evan Yates delivered a strong outing for Chesapeake, tying a career-high with five and one-third scoreless innings. He struck out seven, allowed five hits and walked two. Over his last five starts, Yates has posted a 3.10 ERA with 23 strikeouts against seven walks.

Somerset took the lead in the seventh inning when Garrett Martin hit a two-run homer off right-hander Yaqui Rivera. Rivera struck out five in two and two-thirds innings of relief but took the loss, dropping to 3-1. Somerset’s bullpen was effective, with three relievers combining for five and one-third scoreless innings, including a strong Double-A debut from left-hander Tanner Bauman.

The Baysox are in the middle of a six-game series with the Somerset Patriots, the Double-A affiliate of the New York Yankees. The teams will play the fourth game of the set on Friday night. Left-hander Joseph Dzierwa, the Orioles’ No. 12 prospect, is scheduled to make his Double-A debut for Chesapeake, while right-hander Jack Cebert is expected to start for Somerset. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.

The Chesapeake Baysox, the Double-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, play their home games at Prince George’s Stadium in Bowie. The stadium is located in Prince George’s County, just north of Calvert and Charles counties, making it a convenient destination for Southern Maryland baseball fans. Many families from St. Mary’s, Calvert and Charles counties regularly attend Baysox games to support the Orioles’ farm system and enjoy affordable family entertainment.

The Baysox organization has deep ties to Maryland. The team draws fans from across the state who follow the Orioles’ minor league system. Local players and prospects often receive strong support when they advance through the system, and the Baysox provide a nearby professional baseball option for residents in Southern Maryland who may not be able to travel frequently to Baltimore for major league games.

The loss dropped Chesapeake to 17-24. The team will look to bounce back in Friday’s contest and even the series.
