

LEONARDTOWN, Md. — Communities across Southern Maryland, Annapolis and Prince George’s County are preparing to celebrate Juneteenth with festivals, live entertainment, cultural exhibits, food and opportunities to reflect on the history and significance of the holiday.
Observed annually on June 19, Juneteenth commemorates the day enslaved people in Texas learned they were free in 1865, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued. Today, communities across the country celebrate the holiday through education, culture and community gatherings.
Residents in St. Mary’s County can attend the UCAC Juneteenth Celebration on Saturday, June 20, from noon to 6 p.m. at the St. Mary’s County Fairgrounds in Leonardtown. The annual event features live entertainment, vendors, food, educational exhibits and family-friendly activities.

In Charles County, the 7th Annual Juneteenth Freedom Day Celebration will take place Saturday, June 20, from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Shops at Waldorf Center in Waldorf. Attendees can expect music, local vendors, community organizations and activities celebrating African American history and culture.

Calvert County residents can visit Jefferson Patterson Park and Museum in St. Leonard on Saturday, June 20, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. for a Juneteenth celebration featuring educational programming, exhibits and activities exploring the holiday’s historical significance.
In Annapolis, the annual Juneteenth Parade and Festival will take place June 21-22. The parade begins at 11 a.m. on June 21 at St. John’s College and travels through downtown Annapolis before concluding at Amos Garrett Boulevard. The celebration then continues at the Anne Arundel County Fairgrounds in Crownsville, where attendees can enjoy live entertainment, vendors, food, cultural exhibits and fireworks. Festival hours are 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. on June 21 and 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. on June 22.

In Prince George’s County, the National Harbor Juneteenth Freedom Day Celebration is scheduled for Friday, June 19, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. The waterfront event will feature live performances, food vendors, a Black-owned business marketplace, cultural demonstrations and family activities.
