LA PLATA, Md. — The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) celebrated student creativity with its first community art exhibit showcasing work from Personal Enrichment program participants.
More than 25 pieces in various mediums, styles and perspectives were displayed during the June event. Students’ families and friends gathered for a reception on June 11 to honor their accomplishments.
Madeline Jackson, Community Education program manager, noted the exhibit included photography, watercolor, drawing, crochet and more. It provided opportunities for students to refine skills and explore new artistic pursuits.

“Our students are enthusiastic and proud of their accomplishments,” Jackson said. “The art show was an important opportunity for students to share their work and build the confidence they need to continue learning, growing, and working on their craft.”
The successful debut has CSM planning additional exhibits for Personal Enrichment students in the future.
Participant Laura Umphries described the show as her first time comfortably sharing artwork publicly. She credited instructor Jahee Oh’s drawing and watercolor class for helping her grow.
“When I saw my work hanging on the wall with all the other artists, I felt proud and actually felt like a real artist,” Umphries said. “As Jahee says, practice, experiment, and don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Now I’m taking pride in my art.”
Photographer Carolyn Pounds also gained confidence through participation. Encouraged by her daughter, she shared her work and urged others, especially retirees, to pursue new interests.
“I was pleased to participate in the Art Exhibit as I was able to share my craft with others, and it proved there is an abundance of local talent,” Pounds said. “I encourage everyone, especially retirees, to take courses and keep learning.”
Personal Enrichment courses at CSM cover diverse interests including arts and crafts, travel, food, language learning, IT skills and more. The programs emphasize lifelong learning, helping community members discover passions, build skills and make connections.
“At CSM we recognize the value of lifelong learning,” Jackson said. “The Personal Enrichment courses are designed to help community members discover new interests, make connections, and build new skills.”
