The Calvert County Board of County Commissioners unanimously approved a six-month moratorium on site plan approvals for data center development projects during its Aug. 18, 2026, regular meeting following a public hearing. Under the moratorium, Calvert County will not accept new site plan applications for data center development during the six-month period. The moratorium is scheduled to take effect Aug. 28, 2026, in accordance with Title 4 of the Land Use Article of the Maryland Annotated Code. County officials said the temporary pause will provide time for the Board of County Commissioners to consider whether changes should be made to the Calvert County Zoning Ordinance concerning data centers as a permitted land use. The commissioners are expected to discuss potential zoning ordinance changes related to data centers at a future meeting. The action comes as local governments across Maryland and the region continue examining how large-scale data center projects could affect land use, infrastructure, power demand, water resources, traffic and surrounding communities.
