North Fork School of Equitation Named Best Riding School in Maryland for 2026

Frederick County riding school earns top recognition from The Maryland Small Business Examiner for its dedicated instruction, well schooled mounts, and 100 acre teaching facility

FREDERICK, MD. North Fork School of Equitation, the Frederick County riding school known across Maryland for its educated approach to horsemanship, has been named the Best Riding School in Maryland for 2026 by The Maryland Small Business Examiner as part of its annual Best of Maryland Small Business Awards program.

The recognition celebrates a school built around a single, focused mission: teaching students to ride well. Operating as NFSE, Inc., the school welcomes beginners through advanced riders, providing dedicated, quality instruction on a wide selection of well schooled mounts, with the option for students to learn on their own horse.

A Teaching Approach Built on Educated Horsemanship

What sets North Fork apart is the structure and quality of its instructional program. Lessons run a generous full hour and include grooming, tacking up, and riding, giving students the complete experience of caring for and partnering with a horse, not just sitting on one. Classes are designed to provide individual attention while also offering the stimulus of a group setting, a balance that has long been considered ideal for developing riders.

Lessons are scheduled Monday through Thursday at 4:00 p.m. and 5:30 p.m., as well as on weekend mornings. Beginner classes form in mid March and September, with non beginners welcome to join an appropriate ongoing class at any time during the year. The school requires students to be at least 6 years old, and there is no age limit for adults. Parents and guardians are welcome to quietly observe lessons, a small but meaningful detail that reflects North Fork’s family friendly atmosphere.

A Facility Designed for Riders and Horses Alike

The North Fork School of Equitation facility was designed for the enjoyment of both horses and their riders. The 100 acre property features four barns housing a total of 26 box stalls and 10 straight stalls, a 200 foot by 300 foot show ring with an all weather surface, a 75 foot by 150 foot indoor arena, cross country jumps, trails, and open fields. It is the kind of facility that allows lessons to continue year round in any weather, and gives advanced students room to grow into jumping, dressage, and cross country work.

For riders looking to deepen their experience, North Fork offers week long summer riding programs running 9:00 a.m. to noon. These multi day sessions go beyond the saddle, giving students the opportunity to learn more about riding, horse health, and horse care, the kind of foundational education that turns casual riders into true horsepeople.

Recognition Earned Through Dedicated Instruction

“North Fork School of Equitation represents exactly what this award was created to recognize,” said a spokesperson for The Maryland Small Business Examiner. “A serious riding school with a serious facility, run by people who clearly love what they do and who teach not just riding but the full discipline of horsemanship. Maryland riders are lucky to have NFSE in Frederick County, and they have earned every bit of this recognition.”

North Fork School of Equitation was selected for the 2026 Best of Maryland Small Business Award in recognition of exceptional riding instruction, outstanding equestrian education, and commitment to Maryland’s riding community.
