WALDORF, Md. — A Temple Hills man was charged after authorities alleged he used self-checkout at Sam’s Club in Waldorf but failed to scan hundreds of dollars in merchandise before trying to leave the store.
Lamont Anthony Campbell, 52, of Temple Hills, was charged with theft of $100 to under $1,500 following the June 7, 2026, incident.
The case began around 1:05 p.m. when a Charles County Sheriff’s Office officer responded to the Sam’s Club at 2365 Crain Highway in Waldorf for a report of a shoplifter in custody.
According to charging documents, a store asset protection employee reported that Campbell was seen at self-checkout and only scanned some of the items in his shopping cart before walking past all points of sale and attempting to exit the store.
The employee stopped Campbell before he left and asked him to go to the back office, but Campbell declined, according to court documents. A manager later helped verify the items that had not been paid for.
Charging documents state Campbell did not deny taking the items and told store staff he did not mean to steal, claiming he was busy with his newborn child and forgot to pay for the rest of the merchandise.
The unpaid items totaled $448.58, according to court documents. The items listed in the report included crab cakes, beef fajitas, shrimp tempura, lobster bisque and other merchandise.
Campbell was also barred from returning to the store indefinitely, according to charging documents.
Campbell was arrested and transported to the Charles County Detention Center. Court records show he was initially held without bond on June 7. During a June 8 bond review before Judge Robert C. Wilcox, bond was set at $10,000. Court records show a corporate bond was posted the same day.
A trial is set for July 22 in Charles County District Court.
