HUGHESVILLE, Md. — The Southern Maryland Local Homeless Coalition reported 175 households on the regional shelter waitlist as of July 9, 2026, representing 257 individuals in need of emergency housing.
The waitlist breakdown by household type shows adult households with no children making up the majority at 138, while families with children total 37. By county, St. Mary’s County leads with 80 households, followed by Calvert County with 44 and Charles County with 39.
Adult households without children remain the most difficult to place due to limited shelter options across the region. The coalition operates a regional system, coordinating referrals across Calvert, Charles, and St. Mary’s counties to connect households with the first available appropriate shelter.
“Every number represents a neighbor in our community who is looking for a safe place to stay,” the coalition noted in its update.
The Southern Maryland Local Homeless Coalition continues to work with local partners and shelters to maximize resources and connect individuals and families with support services. Anyone experiencing homelessness or needing emergency shelter is encouraged to visit the coalition’s website to learn about the coordinated entry process and access points for assistance.
This latest waitlist snapshot underscores the ongoing challenge of addressing homelessness in Southern Maryland. The coalition and its partners remain committed to collaborative solutions that provide safe housing options for vulnerable residents across the three counties.
