CALIFORNIA, Md. — By 4 a.m., while most of Southern Maryland is still asleep, Alexis Truby is already balancing the many roles that fill her day. The 26-year-old is a wife, mother of two, full-time government contractor and the owner of The Evelyn Edit & Co., a digital design business inspired by her newborn daughter, Evelyn. What began as a creative hobby designing party decor has grown into a business built on family, faith and the belief that it’s never too late to pursue a dream.
“I’ve always been someone who’s asking, ‘What’s next?’” she told The BayNet. “You just have to take that first step and roll with it… You never know until you try.”
When her husband approached her about starting a business and naming it after their daughter, just as he had named his company, RST Property Management, after their son, she was all in.
The two began brainstorming ideas of what she would like to do. That’s when inspiration struck.
“I really like graphic design, and banners are really popular right now,” she said. “I really want to put thought and effort into what my clients are celebrating because those celebrations should be given everything.”
What started as making a banner for a friend’s daughter’s birthday quickly grew into something bigger after guests at the party began asking if she could create designs for them, too.
That encouragement gave Truby the confidence to pursue something she’d always enjoyed: digital design.
The Evelyn Edit & Co. was born. The business offers custom digital party decor, including banners, invitations, welcome signs, and themed party bundles for any occasion.
For Truby, the business is about more than creative designs. It’s about creating opportunities for her family and showing her children that dreams don’t have an expiration date.
She hopes one day her daughter will look back at the business her mother created in her honor and see more than a logo or a name.
“I want her to be able to look back and say, ‘My mom built this for me,’” she said. “And hopefully this can be something she takes on if she wants.
“From a young age, she can learn the value of hard work and things like that.”
That mindset guided Truby throughout her life. When college didn’t feel financially possible after high school, she chose a different path by joining the Air Force Reserve.
She later returned to school while raising her now-3-year-old son and earned a degree in intelligence studies, proving to herself that goals don’t disappear simply because life gets busy.
Those experiences shaped the advice she now shares with others.
“You just have to do it,” she said. “Don’t be afraid.
“You have to get uncomfortable to become comfortable. It can be scary at first, but everything works out.”
Juggling work, motherhood, and entrepreneurship can be overwhelming, but Truby credits much of her success to the support of her husband, Alex, and her faith.
“I think my biggest fear was managing my time,” she said. “When you have two kids, when you work full time, managing just the house and even just taking care of yourself can be a lot, but I’m glad I made the jump.
“I trust God has a plan for me.”
Truby plans to expand her services as The Evelyn Edit & Co. continues to grow. Her future offerings will include launching an online storefront while continuing to serve families throughout Southern Maryland before branching out to a larger audience.
More than anything, she hopes her story reminds people that it’s never too late to pursue something they’ve been putting off. It may not be easy, but it’ll be worth it.
Looking back at her past self, her message is simple.
“It’s going to be alright,” she said. “Everything’s going to work out.
“You’ll go through trials and tribulations, but ultimately you’ll get to a place in life where you find peace and happiness. Always believe in yourself. You’re going to have hard days, but those days don’t define you.”
Truby believes the first step is often the hardest, yet the most important. Whether it’s starting a business, returning to school, or pursuing a lifelong passion, she believes the key is simply taking that first leap.
“It’s never too late,” she said. “You just have to start.”
