The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office has corrected the implementation timeline for the county’s new school-zone speed-camera program after its original announcement provided a warning period that conflicted with the county ordinance. The correction confirms what SMNEWSNET.COM had already brought to the public’s attention: the Sheriff’s Office originally announced a 15-day warning period even though Ordinance No. 2024-02 requires warnings for 30 days after the first speed-monitoring system is activated. Under the corrected timeline, the warning period will begin Monday, August 24, 2026. Drivers whose vehicles are recorded traveling at least 12 mph over the posted speed limit during that period will receive warning notices by mail, but no fine will be imposed. The 30-day warning period will continue through September 22. The Sheriff’s Office says $40 civil citations will begin Wednesday, September 23, 2026, for violations recorded on or after that date. The Sheriff’s Office issued its original program announcement on August 7. That release stated that warnings would begin August 21 and that citations would begin September 7 following a 15-day warning period.
