PRINCE FREDERICK — The Calvert County Animal Shelter is asking rescue organizations to step forward and help Princess Starfish, a 3-year-old, 30-pound dog found abandoned in a field and now living at the Linda L. Kelley Animal Shelter in Prince Frederick.
Shelter staff describe the dog as gentle and shy. She was discovered alone in a field in heartbreaking condition, and no owner has come forward. Princess Starfish is still adjusting to shelter life. She does not yet walk well on a leash and tends to freeze or retreat to a corner when frightened.
According to the shelter, once Princess Starfish feels secure, she responds positively to treats, calm attention and being near people. The shelter is looking for a rescue partner that can provide the time, patience and environment needed for her to gain confidence outside the shelter setting.

Princess Starfish is up to date on vaccines and has tested heartworm negative. Shelter officials say a rescue group could offer her foster care or a specialized adoption path that allows her to learn trust at her own pace.
The request comes as the shelter continues to care for multiple animals in need. Partnerships with rescue organizations allow municipal shelters like the one in Calvert County to move animals that may require extra support into programs better equipped for long-term rehabilitation and placement. This approach helps manage shelter resources while improving outcomes for dogs with histories of neglect or limited socialization.
Princess Starfish’s case reflects a common challenge for local shelters: some animals arrive with fear-based behaviors that make kennel life difficult but can improve significantly in a home with consistent, gentle handling. Rescue groups often have networks of fosters experienced with shy or timid dogs and can dedicate more one-on-one time than a busy shelter environment allows.
The shelter is open for rescue pick-ups Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Adoption hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 5055 Hallowing Point Road in Prince Frederick. Additional animals available for rescue or adoption can be viewed on the shelter’s website at www.calvertcountyanimalshelter.com.
